Unanimously acclaimed by the critics as one of Stephen Sondheim’s most powerful scores, this black comedy concerns the infamous homicidal career of Sweeney, the unjustly exiled barber who returns to 19th century London seeking revenge against the lecherous judge who coveted his young wife and falsely imprisoned him. Cheated of his revenge against the Judge, Sweeney’s thirst for blood soon expands to include his unfortunate customers, and, with the aid of his razor, he exacts a far more terrible revenge, cheerfully helped by Mrs. Lovett, who is delighted to give new life to her flavourless meat pies! Sophisticated, macabre, visceral and uncompromising, Sweeney Todd mixes intense drama with dark humour, audiences find themselves laughing one moment, and gasping in surprise at the next…. At the show’s core is a challenging score of epic proportion with two tasty tour de force roles in Sweeney and his comic female accomplice Mrs. Lovett.
Centre Stage is the award- winning Youth Theatre Company based in Exmouth. It was established in 1971 as the 14-20 Music and Drama Society and its aims, some 40 years later remain very much the same; to advance the education of children and young people in music and the performing arts and to promote, improve, develop and maintain public education and appreciation of music and the Performing Arts
The company has a membership of 60 young people aged between 11 and 21 who all perform in every production the company produces, ranging from the much loved Gilbert and Sullivan Operattas, the family favourite Rodgers and Hammerstien musical comedies to the new writers such as Howard Goodall, giving this talented company a varied balance of the musicals available to them.
A busy and thorough rehearsal period allows for each member to learn valuable theatre skills as well as build their own self-esteem, confidence, self-respect, team work, a huge sense of belonging which enhances all of their performances and their own inter-personal skills.
As a direct result of our training former members have gone on to theatre schools such as, Bristol Old Vic, Brit School, Mountview, Guildford School Of Acting, LAMDA and RADA. Some have gone on to start in London’s West End and on professional theatre tours and some have set up their own production companies stretching as far afield as Singapore.
The company itself has received huge acclaim, performing at The Royal Albert Hall. The London Palladium and an International tour in Germany of Les Miserables School Edition, as well as working with various household names in our home theatre.
Continuing to keep the company modern, fresh and alive for many more years to come, forms an important part of its vision, always in the forefront with new productions and never afraid to try something new.
